Area Club: AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY

The American Legion Auxiliary No. 0047 met in regular session recently at the VFW Hall. Business included a report on Poppy Days held early in June and donations made.

Shirley Kitch, treasurer, reported 14 renewal memberships received and sent in, including two for shut-ins, $6 donation received from Vi Brown, money donated to Girls State, money donated for veterans needs at the VA Hospital in Iowa City, payment for share in Memorial Day centerfold in The Fairfield Ledger, a percentage of Poppy Days to the Iowa American Legion Auxiliary, and $100 to assist with a Southeast Iowa Honor Tour, which included one or more veterans from the Fairfield area.

Darlene Vorhies reported nearly $900 received during the Poppy Day distribution in early June, plus another $3 collected by a young Tenco consumer who was given some poppies by Vorhies to donate to her friends at Tenco. Vorhies also read a note from Dorothy Rodibaugh which accompanied her dues renewal, and a thank-you letter from the WWI Honor Tour coordinator. Another donation is expected to be made by the local group if another Honor Tour is scheduled for this Fall.

Mary Andersen, Girls State First District Chairperson, will be asked to have the local GirlsState representative share her experience with the local American Legion Auxiliary at their next meeting on September 21st .  At that or another future meeting, a local Honor Tour veteran will be asked to share his experiences on the Honor Tour.
