Area residents win at state fair
Area residents continue to win contests at the 2012 Iowa State Fair.

Area residents continue to win contests at the 2012 Iowa State Fair.
Horseshow enthusiasts across the Midwest competed in the Doubles State Fair Championship and the Open Singles divisions of the Horseshoe Pitching Tournament Saturday. Aaron Adam of Richland placed third in Open Singles?Class D. The state fair hosts both championship and open class competitions every fair day, and division winners are crowned daily.
Farm crops took to the judging table in the John Deere Agriculture Building Thursday. Willard Hoskin of Keosauqua placed second in Small Grains and Legumes-Any Other.
Iowans tested their knowledge of pesky garden plants in the Weed Identification contest Friday. Denver Schultz of Fairfield placed second in the youth division.
Exhibitors entered 650 flowers in the FFA Floriculture competition judged Thursday. Ligeia Ervin of Packwood placed fourth in Carnation, yellow; first in Zinnias, 3 stems, red; eighth place in Zinnias, 3 stems, pink; and seventh in Zinnias, 3 stems, purple. Jenna Swanson of Ollie placed fifth in Zinnias, 3 stems, white; second in Zinnias, 3 stems, yellow; third in Zinnias, 3 stems, purple; and fifth in Zinnias, 3 stems, orange.
The 2012 Iowa State Fair runs through Sunday on the fairgrounds in Des Moines.
