FAIRFIELD - The Fairfield Art Association's 'Take it to the Canvas” exhibit will be open 6-9 p.m. Friday in the Main Gallery at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center.
This unique exhibit is by 14 artists working in either watercolor or acrylic, who took the challenge of creating a work of art in two hours - from start to finish.
The actual painting process took place during the Fairfield First Friday event in August, with a large crowd developing through out the evening. The artwork were then matted and hung for display, with bid sheets for each art piece. The silent auction will continue until the conclusion of the exhibit, with proceeds split between the artist and the art association as a fundraiser for future events.
'It was amazing to watch artists furiously at work in the atrium of the art center, where a huge still life was created,” said artist and Fairfield Art Association volunteer director Suzan Kessel. 'The variety of styles and methods of painting was intriguing for viewers, as the pieces progressed. Some artists were used to working quickly because they regularly do pleine air painting. But I personally struggled and could have used several additional hours to take the painting where I thought it needed to go. But it was very fun and a good learning experience for viewers and the artists who participated.”
Kessel said the art association is planning another similar surprise event for next year.
Artists in the 'Take it to the Canvas” exhibit include two from Mt. Pleasant, two from Washington, one from Keokuk, two from Pulaski, and seven from Fairfield.
