April is upon us and at the library we are making plans to celebrate National Poetry Month and Earth Day!
National Poetry Month is a monthlong, national celebration of poetry and it was established by the Academy of American Poets. The idea is to promote the enjoyment of poetry in popular culture and to celebrate both current and past poets. The Washington Public Library is doing its part by hosting a Poetry Share at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 24, on the second level of the library. Patrons are invited to bring a favorite poem to read aloud or to simply come to listen to poetry. If you are interested in reading a poem, please register at the circulation desk or call 653-2726. Some light refreshments will be served.
April 24 is also Poem in Your Pocket Day! If you cannot make it to the Poetry Share, you can still promote poetry by selecting a poem you love and carrying it with you on this day to share with co-workers, family, and friends. The library has a wide selection of poetry books if you are looking for a particular poem or simply want to browse for one.
In addition, the library is celebrating Earth Day with Project Recycled Runway for teens on Wednesday, April 23 at 2:30 p.m. Sixth- through 12th-graders are invited to come and work together to design and create a piece of clothing from recycled book pages, tape, and string. Jaz It Up will be providing the dress form for this project and last year?s dress is currently on display in the Young Adult Lounge. It will be a challenge, but we think teens might even be able to top last year?s design!
Enjoy April and enjoy your Washington Public Library!
