Have you ever heard the term ?embedded librarianship? before? If you?re not a librarian, probably not. However, you?ve probably seen an embedded librarian and haven?t even realized it. Embedded librarianship is the term used for getting library staff out of the library and into the community, to bring our services directly to you.
Here are some examples of how the Washington Library embeds our librarians in the community:
- preschool storytime: Children?s Librarian Jo Weidner visits every preschool and institutional day care facility in Washington at least once a month to read stories and sing songs with the children. In this way, all preschool children have access to our services, even if they cannot physically come to the library. Thanks, Miss Jo!
- book deliveries: Librarian Linda Witthoft delivers books to home-bound patrons at the United Presbyterian Home and Halcyon House each week. However, she doesn?t just deliver books, she delivers meaningful conversations as well. Visits from Linda often turn into spontaneous book discussions with residents. Thanks, Linda!
- Community boards and committees: All of the library staff members are encouraged to participate in community boards and committees to see what we can do to help local organizations succeed. Library Director Debbie Stanton serves on the Project Lead the Way Regional Partnership Team through Kirkwood and participates in the SAFE Coalition meetings, among many others, while Miss Jo serves on the Women of Washington Iowa Endowment board.
The reason embedded librarianship works so well is because the library gets a chance to see what the community really needs, and then we can plan our own services and programs accordingly. So, next time you see a librarian out of the library during the workday, you?ll know what they are up to!
