The next day, June 26, at 7 p.m. the library will host a showing of the hit film "Monuments Men," starring Matt Damon, George Clooney, and Bill Murray in this historical movie based on true events. It follows a band of Allied soldiers from the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives Program in World War II as they try to recover art and other culturally important items before they are destroyed by the Nazis who stole them. The movie is loosely based on the book The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History by Robert M. Edsel and Bret Witter, a book which the library has in its collection.
On Monday, June 29, at 12 p.m. there will be a program for adults in which the LETs Center presents about Iowa?s own ?monument man," George Stout. Mr. Stout graduated from the University of Iowa and was an art teacher. He helped to rescue art stolen by Nazis during WWII, much like the characters in the movie.
Finally on Sunday, June 28, there will be a book discussion about the All Iowa Reads book for 2015, My Name is Mary Sutter by Robin Oliveira, which adults and teens who participated in All Iowa Reads are invited to attend.
Washington Public Library is a one-stop-shop for entertainment this summer. Get out of the heat and the rain by stopping by the library to check out one of our programs this week!
