The other day one of our patrons walked into the library and said, ?It?s always so cozy and welcoming in here.? This delighted me. Her gratitude for a comforting, familiar place made me aware of how the library serves that need.
Every day, sometimes twice a day, we see our adult ?regulars? come to the library to read the newspaper, use their wireless devices, or just visit with the other ?regulars." Of course we also have our ?regular? readers who go through their books so quickly we sometimes struggle to find them something new to read. ?He just doesn?t write fast enough!? we often hear.
We enjoy our teen and kid ?regulars? who race in after school to play on the computers, then get the next book in the series they are reading, or attend an after-school library program. Our ?regular? toddlers, with their moms and dads, spend hours in the children?s area reading books aloud, trying out the iPad apps for little ones, and playing with the library toys, puzzles and games. Overall our ?regulars? make themselves at home and that is what makes the library a cozy and welcoming place.
During this Thanksgiving week, we at the Washington Free Public Library are thankful for our ?regulars? who are definitely not regular people at all. To us they are quite special. They are the ones who create the atmosphere that makes our space so homey and friendly. We are thankful, too, for those patrons who step into the library for the first time or even just every once in awhile. We hope that when they come in they pause, look around and think ?have I been here before? and feel something almost familiar in the air. And we hope they too, will become one of our ?regulars.?
