A Babysitting Basics Training Course was offered the week of July 6 - 10 to help youth become responsible babysitters.
Special guests filled the week with their expertise. Joey Wallace discussed fire safety and gave each youth the opportunity to use a fire extinguisher. On the second day Michelle and Grady Yoder came and educated the class about infant care and the steps involved in providing for infants. On the third day Ashleigh Nelson, Noelle, Sadie, and Summer talked with the class about toddler care. On fourth day, Becky Widmer discussed ages and stages of young children, safety, age-appropriate toys and activities, and physical, mental, social and emotional aspects of child development.
On the last day, Carrie Ornduff and the Washington County Ambulance spoke with the group on what to do in an emergency and first-aid procedures. They also brought an ambulance and gave class members a tour. Also on the last day, Miranda Romoser, a graduate of the class and current babysitter, spoke on her babysitting experiences. Class members were able to ask her questions and gain insight about becoming a babysitter.
Twenty-six students completed this five day course sponsored by ISU Extension-Washington County. This course is offered each year for youth who have completed fifth grade and over. Contact the Washington County Extension Office for more information at 319-653-4811.
