Bencze wins, three Wolves place top-five at home XC meet

WINFIELD ? The Winfield-Mt. Union cross-country team hosted their home meet on Thursday night and picked up three top-five finishes combined in the two races.

WINFIELD ? The Winfield-Mt. Union cross-country team hosted their home meet on Thursday night and picked up three top-five finishes combined in the two races.
The Wolves finished fifth in the boys? race, with 109 points and didn?t have enough runners to score during the girls? portion.
Gavin Bencze was the fastest runner of the day, winning the boys? race in 17:07.22. Brock Fricke gave W-MU two top-five boys? runners with a fifth-place 17:52.
Bryant Holtcamp and Asa Gipple finished the boys? race 32nd and 33rd respectively. Holtcamp finished the race in 19:09.97 and Gipple finished in 19:15.12.
Kolten Buster placed 50th in the race, in 20:50.69. Jackson Brown was 51st, in 21:09.47, and Kane Harris was 57th, in 22:14.09.
In the girls? race, Cecelia Hemsworth led the way for W-MU with a fourth-place 21:21.94. Johndree Harris gave the Wolves two top-15 runners, placing 14th, in 23:46.62.
Whitney Vantiger finished 24th, in 24:36.84, and Lauren Hagge rounded out the W-MU runners at 27:48.69, for 35th place.
WACO also took part in the meet and finished eighth in the boys? standings, with 239 points. They too had too few girls? runners to score.
John Skriver led the Warriors in the boys? race. He finished just under 20 minutes, in 19:56.84, which was enough for 43rd place.
Joe Edeker finished 55th, in 22:06.09. Tanner Conwell was 58th, in 22:48.56. Trevor Pategas was 59th, in 22:54.09, and Roman Kiefer placed 60th, in 23:23.66.
The Warriors had three runners finish form 39th-41st in the girls? race. Makenzie Shelman was 39th, in 31:28.53. Emily Thomson was 40th, in 31:53.31, and Kanon Ujiie placed 41st, in 32:16.09.
Both W-MU and WACO will be back in action on Monday, Oct. 3, at 4:30 p.m. The Wolves will be in Columbus and the Warriors will be at Iowa Mennonite.
