The Mt. Pleasant boys? soccer team hosted Iowa City Regina on Tuesday at East Lake Park in Mt. Pleasant. The Panthers fell in their home opener by the final score of 3-0.
It was a tough task for Mt. Pleasant to contain a Regina team that went 16-3 last season. The Regals poured shot after shot towards the net, but goalkeeper Noah Brown was on his game.
The first Regina goal came in the seventh minute of the first half, but the Panthers were able to hold them at one goal for 15 minutes until the Regals managed to put one in before halftime.
Mt. Pleasant didn?t give up in the second half, only allowing one Regina goal to cross. Overall, Regina outshot Mt. Pleasant 44-5, but Noah Brown was able to save 23 shots on the night.
The Panthers? main struggle on the day was getting the ball away from the Regina players. The Regals had possession of the ball for most of the game and worked a methodical offense to get good shots on goal.
?With three freshman (Tanner Ruby, Maison Ashton and Ethan Weber) in the starting line-up, this was a good experience to play a team that played a controlled possession game,? said head coach Neil Schmitz.
The junior varsity team fell in their game 3-2 on two Regina goals late in the second half. Their record so far this season is 3-2.
The varsity Panthers fell to 2-1 with the loss and will try and get back into the winners column on Thursday, April 16 at home. MPCHS will face off against conference-rival Keokuk at East Lake Park with the game starting at 4:30 p.m.
Last season, Mt. Pleasant defeated the Chiefs 2-1 on the road before losing to them at home 3-0.
