Chapter AQ PEO of Brighton held its yearly BIL social July 30 at the home of Rose and Steve Jaynes. Cathy Rich and Arlen Fritz served as co-hostesses. They prepared a picnic meal while their husbands grilled cheeseburgers for everyone. It was a wonderful evening of visiting and sharing stories. Before the meal, members toured the Freedom Rock Park with Tim Egli Landscapes from Wayland.
The Altar and Rosary Committee of the St. Joseph Mother Cabrini Church met for its monthly meeting Aug. 13. Final plans were made for the Fall Bazaar, which will be held Aug. 25. Dinner will be served from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. An auction will follow. There will be a country store and an apple booth.
The Krony Krew club met Aug. 14 at the home of Rose Jaynes in Brighton. Bridge was played at one table. The next meeting will be Aug. 28.
The Babberl annual holiday party was Aug. 3 at Ridge Point Park in Waukee. Those present were Pat Remington of Brighton, Kathy Babberl and friend Wayne of Chariton, Pam and Bill Mogensen of Dickson, Tennessee and Kim Babberl of Clive. Also present were Pat's children, Angela and Tony Garmoe with Christopher of Mt. Pleasant, Cody and Mackenzie of Oskaloosa, Travis Remington with Caraline of Cosby, Tennessee, and Brandy and Chris Poli of Waukee. They were joined by their sister-in-law Jenny Babberl with her children Shawn and Sarah, Brad and friend Nate with Shana, and Selena and friend Jason with Travis, Lilly and Kaylanna, all of Ottumwa. Other present were their niece Heather Churchill with Aryah, Bailynn, Hazely and Zuri of Des Moines, Heather's sister's children Lydia and Jordan of Altoona, family friends Lesa and daughter Kayla and Levi of St. Charles and Angie Noah of Des Moines. Beanbag games, gifts, races, water games, a scavenger hunt, bingo, food and visiting were enjoyed by all.
Enjoying the evening meal of Aug. 4 at the home of Winifred Fritz in Brighton were her children, Tony and Lynn Fritz of Brighton, and Jane and Virgil Symmonds of Fairfield. Tony grilled the meal and homemade ice cream was provided.
Travis Remington with Caraline of Cosby, Tennessee, visited his mother, Pat Remington of Brighton July 31 and Aug. 1. Aug. 1, they met friends Doug and Nita Hesseltine of Rubio at Loriann's in Richland. Pat, Travis, Caraline and Nita went to Kalona, Riverside and Washington to shop.
The Shelangoski family reunion was July 27 at the Brighton Community Building. Twenty-four family members arrived from Iowa, Illinois and Missouri. Robert Shelangoski and family and Paul Shelangoski and family were among the guests. Robert and Paul are brothers and both are from Brighton. Everyone enjoyed the food, visiting and storytelling. Loraine Townson was the oldest relative present. Next year, the reunion will be July 25 at the Brighton Community Building.
The Roberts family annual reunion was held Aug. 11 at the Brighton City Park. They included members from the families of Roberts, Sayre, Leeper and Woodsmalls. Forty relatives arrived from Wayland, Fairfield, Brighton, North Liberty, Wellman, Crawfordsville and Downing, Missouri.
Phil and Sandy Speidel of Mt. Pleasant enjoyed dinner at the home of his sister, Shirley Schooley, of Brighton, on Aug. 11. They were joined by Shirley's son, the Monte Schooley family of Iowa City. A birthday celebration was held for Monte.
Joel and Mary Boatright, with Bridget Hollingsworth of Fairfield, visited her mother, Winifred Fritz, of Brighton, Aug. 11.
Sister Janet Kreber of Sioux City arrived at the home of Winifred Fritz in Brighton Aug. 9. Sister Janet enjoyed breakfast and lunch with Winifred. She then left for Fairfield to visit friends and shut-ins. Sister Janet attended Mass with Darlene Baldoiser. They also enjoyed dining out. Sister Janet returned to Winifred's to spend the night of Aug. 10. On Aug. 11, Sister Janet and Winifred attended Mass. They returned to Winifred's for brunch. Sister Janet left for Dubuque, where she met another sister. They were going to leave for Mississippi on vacation Aug. 12.
Around 20 people from Washington, Brighton, Fairfield, Mt. Pleasant and Wayland attended a Celebrate Recovery meeting Aug. 15 at the Brighton Church of God. The evening included dinner, praise and worship music, optional small group sharing, and a testimony from a mother and daughter about how abuse, abandonment, fear and low self-esteem led each of them to various hurts, habits and hangups until they found forgiveness for themselves and learned to accept the love of God and others through Celebrate Recovery. The next weekly meeting, open to anyone with a hurt, habit, or hangup, will be Thursday, Aug. 22, at the Brighton Church of God beginning at 6 p.m.
