Pat Remington met her daughter Brandi Poli, of Waukee, on June 19. They met in Oskaloosa, where they enjoyed shopping and dining at Tasos' Steak House.
Greg and Deb Fritz, of Fairfield, with their grandsons, Brantly, Holden and Rhett (sons of Sarah and Craig Sides), of Lenexa, Kansas, visited his mother, Winifred Fritz, on June 20. They enjoyed fishing, lunch and four-wheeling.
Winifred Fritz was visited June 16 by her children, Lucy Dietzman with Malcolm and Brenden of Keosauqua, Tony and Lynn Fritz of Brighton, and Mary and Joel Boatright with Bridget Hollingsworth of Fairfield. They all enjoyed the evening meal.
Everyone had a fun time on the Brighton Whoopee Walk. They left right on time from the Brighton Community Building at 7 a.m. and missed the rain, as it came later in the morning. A lot of talking and laughing went along with the 2-mile walk. When they arrived back at the Community Center they were treated to bottles of water and granola bars, compliments of the Fareway Grocery Store in Washington.
After the parade and a great barbecue at the concession stand in the park, friends and classmates gathered at the Brighton Community Center for the Brighton Homecoming at 1 p.m. Introductions were made, and classes shared many memories. The Class of 1954 gathered to celebrate their 65th anniversary. Rosemary Pacha was presented a bouquet of roses from the Class of 1961 honoring her as the Grand Marshal of Whoopee Days. Doris Canavan, of Sun City, Arizona, shared some of her art and demonstrated playing the spoons. She was here visiting her friends, Bruce and Sonja Campbell, of Washington. Charles Hanson, of Washington, gave a quilt he had made as a door prize. It was won by Charles Lowe, of Washington. Marjorie Hesseltine Polton, of Rock Island, Illinois, Class of 1942, was the oldest member present. Guests were from Arizona, Illinois, California, Kansas, Missouri, and Iowa. Jane Whitaker registered guests. Wanda Lowe, Phyllis Scheeler, and Rosemary Pacha served refreshments, and Rosemary served as the master of ceremonies for the afternoon.
The Whoopee Pie Contest sponsored by Hy-Vee is such a fun event. Winners in the kids' division were Leroy and Christopher. In the adult division, first place went to the reigning champion, Michael Pringle. Coming in as a close second place was Caleb Baxter. They were crowned with a ring of Boyd's Bologna, since Boyd's is a legend of Brighton, having originated there. Everyone enjoyed watching as the contestants devoured many whoopee pies. They all said they were delicious but big.
Two dozen people (from Washington, Brighton, Fairfield, Wayland and Mt. Pleasant) attended a Celebrate Recovery meeting June 27 at the Brighton Church of God. The evening included dinner; praise & worship music; optional small group sharing; and a testimonial from a family with a cycle of dysfunction (co-dependency, anger and fear) from generation to generation. In addition, 18-month chips were presented to two individuals who are in recovery from addictions.
The next weekly meeting, open to anyone with any hurt, habit or hangup, will be held Thursday, July 4 at the Brighton Church of God beginning at 6 PM with a free meal.
