July 7 The Washington County Extension office held a ?Bug Mania? Day Camp for 30 Kindergarteners and first graders with the help of eight County Council Members throughout the week. Camps were held July 5 and 6, at Riverside and Marr Park.
The campers learned about different kinds of insects and their three major parts ? the head, thorax, and abdomen. Campers went on an insect scavenger hunt, created coffee filter butterflies, and explored habitats. Youth also learned about the development stages of insects.
County volunteers included: Maggie Smith, Amanda Pfeifer, Keiffer Sexton, Averi Kron, David Hora, Joceline Spenner, Roman Kiefer, and Clara Schmitz.
Students finishing kindergarten and first grade participated in the day camp sponsored by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Washington County. Summer day camps are offered each year for youth pre-kindergarten to fifth grade. Contact the Washington County Extension office for more information at 319-653-4811.
