Cardinal baseball splits with Danville

DANVILLE ? The Cardinal baseball team came within one run of an impressive doubleheader sweep of Danville in Southeast Iowa Superconference play Monday.

The Comets won the opener 4-1 before a missed fly ball in the nightcap resulted in a 5-4 loss and conference split.

?We lost the second game on a fly ball that got lost in the light,? said Cardinal head coach Tom Hallgren. ?We had too many mistakes in the second game to let Danville hang around.?

The two games were highlighted by a pair of solid pitching performances by Comet starters. Ty Short struck out eight and gave up two hits in the opener for his fifth win of the season. Tanner Chance took the loss in the nightcap, allowing four earned runs but fanning 11 in 5 2/3 innings.

Chance went 3 for 7 in the two games with two extra base hits and two RBI, Short finished 3 for 7 with a pair of RBI and Conner McElderry knocked in two runs.

Cardinal?s record is 10-8 overall and 7-3 in conference. Cardinal visits New London today.
