The Carnegie Historical Museum is presenting a new military display at Jefferson County Real Estate office on the west side of the square.
This display, filled with items given to the museum by local families, is to honor our military during the month of May and into the summer.
Objects on display include a 49-star United States flag, a German metal helmet, aviation goggles, a model of the P47 Thunderbolt plane flown by Lt. Robert Phillips, and a "Welcome Home" button the city of Fairfield created for its veterans returning from World War I.
Uniforms representing the various service branches include Lt. Col. Forrest Schwengle's Air Force uniform from the Korean War, Lt. N. Virginia Van Nostrand's nurse uniform, and WWII Navy frogman Don French's uniform and duffel bag. Other items of interest include Chet Danielson's brown cloth suitcase, a WWII poster featuring Iowa's Sullivan Brothers, a photograph of WWI Nurse Kathryn Olive Graber, and a Red Cross cup used to feed wounded soldiers.
A special thanks to Doug and Jeff Alexander of Jefferson County Real Estate for making this space available to the museum for an “on the square” display.
The Carnegie Historical Museum welcomes all of our community to come and visit the museum and see additional military mementos that are part of our extensive collection all relating to donors from Fairfield and Jefferson County. Our hours are noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and Saturday from 11 a.m. till 3:00 p.m.
