Twenty-five second- and third-grade campers turned into aerospace engineers through the ?Parachute? STEM camp put on by Washington County Extension at New Dawn Park on July 8.
Throughout the camp, students gained a better definition of science terms like engineering, aerospace, drag, variables, data, and were able to experiment with the designs of parachutes. Students worked in groups and individually to design, test and redesign parachutes with the goal to have the slowest drop time.
Campers explored how engineers solve problems and brainstorm to create solutions. The ?Parachute? camp was a Clover University STEM camp that provided campers with a hands-on learning experience focused on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Leaders for this camp were Paige Dieleman, STEM Camp Coordinator, County Council members; Macy Marek, Makenzi Marek, and Emma Stout assisted with the day.
For more information on the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) camps, or other science opportunities for youth, contact the Washington County Extension Office at 319-653-4811.
