Post 29 American Legion met at regular session with Wayne Kaufman commanding. Adjutant Jim Peterson reported on membership and finances. Fund chairman Lonny Milligan reported that the land auctions for which the members provide food, is over for the year. Plans were finalized for the Nov. 11 Veterans Day event, including the dinner at the Presbyterian Church and programs to be presented at Halcyon House and the United Presbyterian Home. New Chaplain Ron Brock was installed by Bob Kennedy. Two members, Dan McClure and Jerry Vonnahme were recognized as the newest paid-up-for-life members. The annual winter program of providing stocking caps and gloves for patients at the VA has begun. A report on the program ?Wreaths across America? was heard.
The program was provided by member Gerald Franzen on the subject of the Arlington cemetery in Washington, D.C. The property was once owned by the George Washington family and most recently by Robert E Lee, who was forced to vacate because of the Civil War. After the war Gen. Lee was reimbursed for the grounds which now provides burial space for some 400,000 military dead. At the current rate of some approximately 35 burials per week, the space will be filled within the next 25 years.
Veterans of the area are invited to meet with the Legion the second Tuesday of the month at the Blair House.
