American Legion Post 29 met in regular session with Wayne Kaufman commanding. Reports were heard from Jim Peterson, Adjutant on finances and membership renewals and Bob Kennedy on the recent District conference. Bob spoke on the proceedings at the session, announced the date of the steak fry, and spoke of the efforts trying to get 1,000 veterans to march in the parade the first day of the state fair. Lonny Milligan, fundraising chair, spoke of activities coming up this summer at which we will have a food stand; they are cruise nights on the square, the fly-in breakfast at the airport, and Mother?s Day flower delivery. It was moved that the post donate funds to two programs which benefit disabled veterans, which are a fishing event and a golf outing. Initial plans were made for Memorial Day which include a service at the bridge, and Elm Grove, and a speaker and memorial service at the high school. One member, Kermit Hotopp, WW II veteran, has passed away.
The program was provided by Robert Roddy, retired Naval architect, who had a 45-year career at the David Taylor model basin in Washington, D C. Rob is a certified authority on the Titanic and its fellow ships. His talk was accompanied by slides, and much information was shared with the group. He will return to the next two meetings with continuing information. Anyone interested in the Titanic are invited to attend.
Many qualified veterans are eligible to belong to the American Legion, and they are invited to attend the meetings as guests. Meetings are held at the Blair house on the second Tuesday evening of the month at 7 p.m.
