Fleur-de-Lis Club members met at the home of Theresa Hora at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 27.
A short business meeting was conducted by president Nancy Kimmel. Roll call was answered with members telling of a favorite Halloween memory or costume they wore or made for their children. The secretary and treasurer?s reports were given by Linda Birney. Members were reminded to be thinking of the club?s Christmas donation that would be decided upon at the next meeting and collected.
Following the meeting, Emily Hora, daughter of Theresa and Brian Hora, told of her experiences June 12 ? 17, 2016 at the American Legion Auxiliary Girls? State held on the Drake Campus in Des Moines. This is four girls who have completed their junior year of high school and was started over 70 years ago by the American Legion Auxiliary. There were over 300 girls from around the state which included 4 from Washington High School who attended. Emily used her laptop computer to show pictures from the week?s activities. This week takes the girls through the entire political process. It covers city government in Iowa. This week includes citizenship training helping to create leadership skills and helping to mold future leaders in the community and society. Early in the week, the girls elect leaders (their mayors and city council members), write bills for debate and run a legislative session. They were divided into two fictious political parties, the Naturalists and Federalists. Each girl was then assigned to a city for a week with each floor of their dorm being the city of about 30 girls. They roomed alphabetically, so Emily was fortunate to have as one of her roommates, a cousin. Emily was elected and served on the Council. She also ran for the office of secretary of agriculture, which included giving a speech and campaigning. Each room door was covered with white boards. They were kept busy with lots of assemblies, speakers, daily flag raising and lowering, and field trips including a tour to the State Capital. At the end of the week, an inauguration is held with the installation of the governor and her officials in their formal attire.
In addition, one member, Bev Krotz, had attended Girls? State after her junior year in high school and three members had daughters who had attended Girls? State.
Following the program, the group then enjoyed refreshments and visiting around the table on many subjects. The next meeting will be at 1:30 p.m., Nov. 17, at the Moravian Church, weather permitting, with Lynda Jarrard as hostess.
