The first jumpers were boys, but later we think of girls jumping rope. They were called enders and jumpers. This sport was started over 1,000 years ago. In June is the National Rope Jumping Contest and you can watch it on ESPN. Many rhymes, counting, and alphabet games were played by jumping rope. There are even hoop-jumping contests.
Karen told of different card games, many of which are still played. Board games became popular as we became more affluent. Some were Checkers, Scrabble, Lotto, Parcheesi, Monopoly, Clue, Errand Boy, and Game of Life.
Members had fun remembering games we played at recess at school. Some were Andy Over, Jacks, Hop Scotch, Paddle Ball, Keep away, Pick- up- Sticks and Tag. One of the oldest games came from the Philippines in 500 B.C. called Yo ?Yo?s. The first Jacks were really made from bones. Tick ?Tack-Toe was the first computer game.
Car games became popular with more automobiles and vacations. Things to look for were Burma Shave signs, license plates, different animals and many other things.
Pantyhose with a grapefruit in it can be a lot of fun too!
Norma served refreshments at the close of the meeting.
