The December meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary Leon Beatty Post 29 met Dec. 13, at the Washington County Ambulance Barn, with six members attending. President Sue Gilmere called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. The prayer was given by Dixie Young, and the Pledge of Allegiance and reading of the Preamble for God and Country were said by all.

The December meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary Leon Beatty Post 29 met Dec. 13, at the Washington County Ambulance Barn, with six members attending. President Sue Gilmere called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. The prayer was given by Dixie Young, and the Pledge of Allegiance and reading of the Preamble for God and Country were said by all.
There were no additions or corrections of the minutes, which were unanimously approved. Dixie Conrad gave the treasurer?s report, which was unanimously approved. A review of the members showed that, of 75 members, 46 are paid up. The unit goal is 66. This was approved by all. One new member was welcomed, Kathleen Goodwin.
In old business, it was reported that there was no correspondence for the month. It was reported that the unit had sent a gift to the Veterans Hospital to help with the pizza parties held monthly for the VA patients. Dixie Conrad reported that she had filed for the 990, and it was confirmed and updated for the year. It was reported that the veterans dinner went very well and that a lot of desserts were left over. They had planned for 200 and had served only 83. Three boys who had gone to Boys? State and three girls who went to Girls? State spoke of the experiences they had while attending. The speaker did an excellent job speaking about the past, present and future roles of a veteran. Connie Pence and Carla McCandless honored those MIA. Martha Hahn reported that she had quite a few names for Girls? State. Girls must be in the 11th grade.
In new business, there was discussion about not having meetings when it is so cold, and there will be no meeting in the month of January. The next meeting will be at 7 p.m., Feb. 14, 2017, at the Washington County Ambulance Barn. Dixie Young handed out updated copies of the Unit Constitution, which will be reviewed at the February meeting. Wreath placing at the Keokuk cemetery was discussed. It was also reported that the unit decided to give each of the four nursing homes in Washington a donation for Christmas gifts for the veterans. Dixie Young offered the closing prayer, and the meeting was adjourned.
