Heather Heddens hosted the Sept. 13, meeting of the Washington Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) at her home, with 18 in attendance. Co-hostesses were Peg Stephens and Karen Murphy.
City Administrator Brent Hinson spoke about the city?s drinking water system. He explained the history of the system of wells and the plans for improvements. The city has three Jordan Sandstone Aquifer wells. Each of them is 1,900 feet deep. The oldest well was drilled in 1946 and the newest in 1969. The water plant uses an electrodialysis process to treat the water. The water plant was built in 1992. The city stores 1.7 million gallons of water. There are 52 miles of water mains. Some of the pipes are 100-plus years old.
Marde McConnell conducted the meeting in the absence of president Millie Youngquist. The minutes were read and approved.
Treasurer Patty Roe presented the financial report. The financial report was approved as presented.
The club discussed plans for the National Honor Society reception for Washington High School members and inductees and the Education Award Presentation. The event will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, at the United Presbyterian Church. Members signed up for the work schedule and food donations. The guest speaker will be Kelli (Long) Brown. She will be introduced by Linda Gonshorowski or Mary Wagamon. The club will honor the Washington County Extension Service with the Education Award. Debbie Stanton or Heather Heddens will introduce the recipients.
A thank-you card from the WRAP students for the guest speakers the club provided was received.
Virginia Bordwell distributed the greenery booklets and the price lists to the members. Members are to turn in their orders to Virginia or Kitch Shatzer by Monday, Oct. 24. Poinsettia orders are due Nov. 17 and will be delivered around Dec. 1.
Debbie Stanton reported that the club?s Facebook page is online at: AAUW Washington Ia Branch. She said the page has received quite a few likes. She also spoke about the Washington County Domestic Abuse Coalition.
The next meeting will be held at the Washington Public Library at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11. Co-hostesses will be Debbie Stanton, Linda Wenger and library staff. The program will be ?What?s New at the State Hygienic Lab? by Rick Bonar. The library will also host the University of Iowa Mobile Museum that day.
The meeting adjourned and members enjoyed delicious strawberry shortcake.
