The March meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary Leon Beatty Post 29 was held Tuesday, March 14, at the Washington County Ambulance Center in Washington with seven present. President Sue Gilmere called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. The opening prayer was given by Dixie Young, and the Pledge of Allegiance and reading of the Preamble for God and Country were read by all. Minutes and treasurer?s and membership reports were given and approved.
Dixie reported on the membership for 2016 ? there was a total of 77 members, 55 paid-up members and four members not paid, and five deceased. She reported that she had removed several of the members who had canceled their membership with the Auxiliary. As of March 2017 the Auxiliary had a total of 60 members. The members encourage any woman who has a veteran in the family to join them. Meetings are held the second Tuesday of the month, except for summer months. They resume meetings in September.
In old business, Martha Hahn reported on Girls? State. There will be four girls attending from the area.
In new business, Sue reported that the Auxiliary will be going to direct billing for the dues, and Unit Data forms are to be filled out and returned to the state by April 15. Dues will go up for seniors and will remain the same for juniors. There was discussion concerning the poppies. It was reported that they have been ordered, and Dixie Young is in charge of them. Any members willing to help with the poppy sales are asked to contact her.
Upcoming events: Relay for Life will be from noon to 10 p.m., June 24, on the square in Washington. Dixie Conrad is in charge of Team Hope and will host a meeting at her house sometime before the event. Luminary bags will be available.
A Color Run at Marr Park is scheduled for April 29; contact Dixie Conrad for more information. A Ding Darling program will be held at 2 p.m., March 26; contact any Legion member for tickets. Corn Country Cruisers Car Show will be from 5 to 9 p.m., May 13; the Legion provides the food, and the Auxiliary hosts a bake sale, and Sue will be ordering supplies. First District meeting will be April 22 in Columbus Junction; those planning to attend should RSVP by April 15. Election of officers will be in May, and Sue would like to step down from serving as president. The county meeting will be held as soon as a date can be decided; Sue is county president, and Dixie Young is county treasurer.
