The American Legion Auxiliary Leon Beatty Post 29 met Tuesday, Feb. 14, at the Washington County Ambulance Barn with five members attending. President Sue Gilmere called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. The opening prayer was given by Carla McCandless. The American Legion Auxiliary Leon Beatty Post 29 met Tuesday, Feb. 14, at the Washington County Ambulance Barn with five members attending. President Sue Gilmere called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. The opening prayer was given by Carla McCandless. The Pledge of Allegiance and the reading of the Preamble for God and Country were read by all.
A review of the December minutes and the minutes from the special meeting held on Feb. 3, 2017, was done. There were no additions or corrections. Dixie Conrad gave the treasurer?s report, and it was approved. Dixie reported that the auxiliary?s membership goal was 66, and it currently had 77 members. Kathleen Goodwin and Mary Dohman were welcomed as new members. The auxiliary encourages any women who have a veteran in the family to join and help support our veterans.
In old business, Martha Hahn gave a report on the Girls? State candidates. She had met with three of the four girls interested in attending. She gave a brief history about Girls? State, a government program started in 1946 for 11th-grade girls to help them learn about how the government works from city, county and state government offices. She noted that the deadline for a refund would be April 30. In new business, Sue introduced the two new members. It was reported that Connie Pence was in the hospital and Karen Arduser was recovering from surgery. Get-well cards were signed for both. Sue reported that the American Legion would be presenting a Visit with Ding Darling at 2 p.m., March 26, 2017, at the Washington Area Performing Arts and Events Center at Washington High School, 1111 South Avenue B in Washington. People are asked to contact Federation Bank in Brighton, Legion members, or Kennedy Insurance for tickets. For further information, contact Lonny Milligan at 319-461-4757. Money from ticket sales will benefit American Legion Post 29, supporting veterans and their families in the local community.
Dixie Conrad reported that Relay for Life would be held from noon to 10 p.m., June 24, 2017, around the square in Washington. The American Legion Auxiliary will make a donation to it. Dixie also read a thank-you card from the Veterans Hospital for the donation that the auxiliary had given for their pizza parties.
A meeting was also held at 7 p.m., March 14, at the Washington County Ambulance Barn at 1120 North Eighth Street in Washington.
