Linda Birney was hostess to Fleur-de-Lis Club members and guests, Lynda Jarrard, Dorcas Jarrard and Emma Jarrard on Thursday, Nov. 19, at 1:30 p.m.
Nancy Kimmel, president, conducted a short business meeting. Roll Call, ?What I am Thankful for and/or Thanksgiving Plans," was answered by members and guests. The secretary-treasurer reports were given by Linda Birney. In place of a gift exchange, a collection of money and canned goods was taken up for the Christmas donation to be directed to a local organization. Following discussion, the group decided to take $25 from the club treasury to add to the collection as well.
Dorcas Jarrard gave a very interesting and informative program on Home Schooling. She and her husband home school their two children, which they have been doing for 11 years, and feel there is a lot more freedom in choosing the curriculum for their children. She explained the many reasons parents home school. The administrative office and rooms for unit studies of the Washington-WACO home schooling group have use of the basement of the US Bank in Washington. There are five supervisory teachers to assist parents with the curriculum the parents decide to use. Upon graduation, the state of Iowa issues a GED and the group then holds its own special graduation with diplomas. Dorcas also shared with the group the barn quilts that she paints and has for sale at Dodici?s Shop in Washington and at craft shows where she displays them along with other items. She is a busy mother, teacher and crafter.
Following the program, the hostess served refreshments to members and guests around her dining room table. The remainder of the afternoon was spent visiting and catching up.
The next meeting will be Dec. 10, at 12:30 p.m. with Theresa Hora for the annual salad luncheon. Bring a salad to pass and table service will be provided.
