The November meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary Leon Beatty Post 29 met on Nov. 8, at Washington County Ambulance with five members attending. President Sue Gilmere called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. The prayer was given by Dixie Young, and the Pledge of Allegiance and reading of the Preamble for God and Country were said by all.
Sue reported on the October minutes, which were approved with no additions or corrections. Dixie Conrad gave the treasurer?s report, which was approved.
Sue reported that she had attended the district meeting in Mount Pleasant and noted that Verlinda had given the Washington unit praise for its donation for her project, Wreaths for the Veterans? Graves at Keokuk National Cemetery. There are 5,310 graves to place wreaths on, starting at 11 a.m., Dec. 17. All veterans are invited to attend. Sue also reported that the Girls? State information is now online. Registration and fee are due by Dec. 1. The Girls? State is also requesting Walmart or Walgreen gift cards and money for the buses to transport the girls to their tours of the State Capitol.
Dixie Young reported on the veterans? dinner, scheduled for 6 p.m., Friday, Nov. 11, at the United Presbyterian Church in Washington. Ainsworth, Crawfordsville and Wellman veterans and families were invited to attend. The menu included pork loin, potato salad, baked beans and desserts. It was noted that only three of the girls who went to Girls? State planned to attend the dinner.
There was discussion about what the unit would do for the Christmas project. A motion was passed to give to the VA Hospital in Iowa City and to each of the four nursing homes in Washington for the mini bus rides or haircuts for the veterans in each of those facilities.
The group would like to encourage women of veterans? families to attend the Auxiliary meetings on the second Tuesday of each month. Members were reminded of the Veterans Day ceremony on Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. at the Blair House, as well as the Veterans? Dinner at 6 p.m. at the United Presbyterian Church; and the wreath-placing ceremony at 11 a.m., Dec. 17, at Keokuk National Cemetery, which all veterans are invited to attend.
The next meeting will be at 7 p.m., Dec. 13, at Washington County Ambulance.
