The Wayland Lions Club held its January meeting at the Wayland Community Center. There were 11 members present, plus Guest Speaker Steve Miller.
President Jim Hester called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Robert Meyer gave the Invocation before the meeting broke for a delicious meal catered by Alice Hockstetler.
At the resumption of the meeting, Carole Martins gave the minutes for the Christmas party. Twenty-seven attended the Christmas party and were entertained by musician Ned Francis, who resides in Farmington. Ned sang a wide variety of genre, including folk, country, polka and other favorite holiday music accompanied by his guitar.
Terry Kaufman gave the treasurer?s report and the status of national and state dues obligations. Both treasury and secretary reports were unanimously approved.
Lion Stan Meyer motioned for a donation to help rebuild the business recently claimed by fire, which was approved.
Steve Miller was introduced as the Guest Speaker by 1st Vice President Chuck Brown. Steve proposed a car show to be held in Wayland in August and suggested the following: Wayland Lions Club to secure sponsors; suggested handing out plaques for the ?Top 40? cars and large trophies for categories such as ?Best in Show and ?Burn out? contest for muscle cars; word of mouth and putting information on the ?Rick?s List,? a website that lists car shows; Steve has organized four car shows in the past and Wayland Lions Club has been involved with two of them; having an entry fee per car; holding the event on a Saturday; with Sunday as a rain date and ending registration at 11 a.m. on the date of the event.
The Wayland Lions Club members tabled the discussion for approval of the car show until the Feb. 21 meeting, so further details could be resolved, like conflict with Iowa State Fair and vacations.
The Wayland Lions Club is always welcoming new like minded citizens anxious to help and give back to their community. Please call Terry Kaufman at People?s Bank 319-256-2131, if interested. Meetings are held the third Tuesday of every month at the Wayland Community Center.
