Peg Gerot was hostess to the Log Cabin Questers on May 5, at her apartment at Halcyon House in Washington. Eight members and Peg?s daughter were present. Sheila Gerot presided over the business meeting. Dues were paid by 10 members. Treasurer Norma Stutsman, gave the treasurers? report. She will send membership dues to the Iowa State Quester organization for 10 members. Log Cabin project funds will be given to the Washington DAR for restoration of the Log Cabin in Washington.
Sheila Gerot, Karen Lyons, Sharon Hahn and Martha Hahn attended the Iowa State Day in Oskaloosa on April 8 and 9. The group enjoyed the Iowa State Quester 50th Birthday Party, and visited three homes, the Feathered Nest at Lake Keomah, the Fredrick Knight Logan Home and the McNeil Stone Mansion and the Montage at the Mall . Other activities were antique shopping and eating out.
Members worked on the Log Cabin Centerpiece for their table for the International Quester Meeting in Des Moines later this month. Norma Stutsman furnished a miniature Log Cabin she had made. Dorothy Koehler donated some miniature figurines; and Martha Hahn, old spools. Sheila Gerot, Karen Lyons, Nancy Schmidt and Sharon Hahn will be taking this to Des Moines for the club?s table.
Martha Hahn presented a wonderful program on the Civil War and General Samuel Rice.
General Rice was Martha?s Great Grandfather. Martha Hahn, Dick Kennedy, and Bob Kennedy attended the dedication of a memorial monument for General Samuel Rice in Sheraton, Arkansas, in November 2015. This was near the Battle of Jenkins Ferry, Arkansas, in 1860. Samuel Rice was born in Ohio and after the early death of his father he migrated to Mahaska County, Iowa. Governor Kirkwood of Iowa asked him to join the 33rd Regiment as a lieutenant colonel for the Union. After the battle of Vicksburg, he became a Brigadier General. He was wounded at the Battle of Jenkins Ferry, Arkansas. He later died in 1864 after having his foot amputated.
Martha showed pictures of the dedication and pictures of the Civil War memorials around Jenkins Ferry and Chariton Arkansas. Martha?s brother, Dick Kennedy is a Civil War buff, so they had a very historical family trip and learned much about the Civil War.
Peg and her daughter served refreshments at the close of the meeting.
