A regular meeting of Chapter J of P.E.O. was held on May 5, at 6:30 p.m. at the Morrison Center of Halcyon House with Carol Winga and Lois Greiner serving as co-hostesses.
The program preceded the business meeting. Jane Davis shared a very enthusiastic and informative program about RAGBRAI, past and present. RAGBRAI stands for Register?s Annual Bike Ride Across Iowa and began in 1973 involving a few hundred bikers, with only about 150 actually biking the entire distance across Iowa. In the ?bike touring world? RAGBRAI is known as the oldest, largest and longest bike ride. Over 200 bike rides have been established following RAGBRAI?s lead in 1973! Jane shared a PowerPoint presentation and told the group that 2016 is the fourth year for Washington to be an ?overnight town? for RAGBRAI, other years were 1986, 1990, and 2000. On Friday, July 29, over 20,000 bikers and support people will travel 68.5 miles from Ottumwa to arrive in Washington. They will leave Saturday, July 30, to travel 49.7 miles to Muscatine to culminate their RAGBRAI tour and to put their bike wheels in the Mississippi River. Jane concluded the program by sharing the names of the many, many local people directly involved in the all the pre-planning for this huge event for Washington. P.E.O. Chapter J members were also encouraged to ?join in the fun? and to host bikers and/or to volunteer a few hours to help in the hospitality Washington wants to show our 20,000 ?guests.?
Highlights of the short business meeting were: corresponding secretary Jo Ross read a thank-you letter from Kristine Anderson, Cottey College representative, thanking Chapter J for a recent donation to their undesignated fund.
President Lynn Loula shared that program book information will be delivered to members before the next June 2 meeting.
A group discussion took place on possible ways Chapter J could show hospitality during RAGBRAI.
In closing, the group recognized the upcoming school teaching retirement of their Chapter J President Lynn Loula. Lynn was thanked her for her many years as a WHS teacher and for her recent, excellent directorship of the wonderfully entertaining and very well-attended high school play, ?Beauty and the Beast.?
