Bev Bartman gave the afternoon program on W.P.A. Bev?s dad and Billy?s dad had worked with the WPA or the Works Program Administration. Eight million were unemployed in the Great Depression from 1935 to 1943. These people were employed by the government during this time to build parks, roads, federal buildings, libraries, roads, coliseums, zoos, schools, libraries, armories, grandstands, and athletic fields. The rural electric program was also started. Artists were also employed to paint murals in the federal buildings. The Sigourney post office was build and has a mural from this period.
Bev?s dad worked on building ponds in Indiana. Billy?s Dad worked on building parks in Michigan. This federal program helped to alleviate the Depression and build the American work ethic.
Karen Lyons treated the group with valentines refreshment at the close of the meeting. Bev Bartman treated the members with an antique valentine from her collection. Happy valentine!
