American Legion Auxiliary
American Legion Auxiliary No. 47 recently met at the Fairfield VFW. The meeting was opened by President Linda Hendricks with the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, the Auxiliary Preamble, and a prayer by Joyce Countryman, Chaplain. Kathy Garrison, Marie Griffin and Floyd West were guests.
Hendricks read a thank-you letter from the Marshalltown Veterans Home; $1,000 in needed items were delivered there in January by Hendricks, Countryman, West and Roger Frakes. She also shared a list of items that are needed at the home.
Darlene Vorhies reminded those present that the First District Auxiliary Spring Conference will be April 6 in Mt. Pleasant. National Poppy Day is May 24; Fairfield American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Days is scheduled for May 17-18. One thousand poppies have been ordered.
This year is the 100th anniversary of the American Legion Auxiliary. The U.S. Mint is offering three commemorative coins honoring the anniversary of the American Legion.
Treasurer Shirley Kitch reported another $50 has been sent for veterans needs at the VA Hospital in Iowa City, and $400 was sent to sponsor a second Fairfield High School junior to attend Girls State in June. Fairfield auxiliary member Mary Andersen is the American Legion Auxiliary State Girls state chairwoman.
Andersen has submitted 12-year-old Carley Seeley for the Auxiliary's Good Deed Award for Seeley's many hours of volunteer time and efforts with the Puppy Jake Foundation that trains service dogs for veterans.
The next meeting will be May 15.
