Wayland Lions Club
The Wayland Lions Club held its Tuesday, Aug. 20, meeting at the Wayland Community Center. There were 15 members in attendance; plus two guests.
President Randy Morrow called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Bob Meyer gave the invocation. Larry Graber lead a special prayer for ailing Wayland Lion Vernon Leichty.
The meeting broke for a meal catered by Alice Hochstetler.
Lion Brian Pattyson read the minutes of last meeting and Terry Kaufman gave the treasurer's report, which were both approved.
The guest speaker was Henry County Sheriff Rich McNamee. He gave an enlightening overview of his sheriff's department and their responsibilities while patrolling 432 square miles of the county 24/7, 365 days a year.
The patrolling is accomplished with the following assets:
' 10 deputy sheriffs, three clerks, 12 associate or intern sheriffs, one full-time and one part-time dispatcher.
' 16 patrol cars, one 10-person van, one transport, one ATV.
McNamee listed his four main goals:
' Pro-active law enforcement
' Cooperation with other agencies
' Increase patrols in rural areas
' Fiscal responsibility
The new jail will accommodate 96 beds, which is 36 more than present. This will benefit by available quantity and have a big savings in time and money from the present system of transporting inmates to facilities in other cities, due to lack of room. The new jail is planned to open in October.
The Wayland Lions Club members were impressed with the information shared.
In old business, the Wayland Lions unanimously approved former President Bill Grimm as secretary for the club.
The Old Threshers activities were discussed and some members will assist New London Lions Club or other exhibits.
The Warren Coleman Award will be presented to Terry Kaufman at the Sept. 17 meeting.
In new business, Wayland Lions Club will work the football concessions on Sept. 27.
Randy Morrow introduced Gwen DeVaul as a potential new member of the Wayland Lions Club.
The Annual Rose Sale Fundraiser will have the Wayland Lions Club members taking orders for one dozen roses for $15. They will be delivered on Saturday, Sept. 21. The proceeds will be used for projects in the Wayland communities.
Brian Pattyson will contact Axis Vision Care regarding two students needing glasses at WACO.
Marianne Pattyson will follow up on a request for hearing aids.
The next meeting will be Sept. 17.
