Fairfield Girl Scouts collecting for Lord's Cupboard Oct. 15
Fairfield Girl Scouts will be canvassing the town from 5:30-7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 15, to collect donations for The Lord's Cupboard.
Canned meats and paper goods are in high need. Residents who will not be home can leave items on their doorstep. The items should be marked for The Lord's Cupboard food drive.
Reservations requested for Henry County Historical Preservation lunch, tour
The Henry County Historic Preservation Commission will meet at noon, Wednesday, Oct. 16, at the East Grove Farms Meadery winery.
Lunch will be provided by East Grove Farms and a tour of the East Grove pioneer Quaker Meeting site and cemetery will follow the regular meeting, weather permitting. The tour will begin about 1:30 p.m.
The public is invited to attend, however it is recommend those attending call in advance so there is enough seating for the tour. Call Joel Garretson, chairman, at 319-217-0276 or email JDB1936@gmail.com.
Fairfield Lions to have annual broom sales fund raiser
The Fairfield Lions Club will have its annual broom-sales fund raiser from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday and Saturday, Oct. 12-13, at the Fairfield Hy-Vee.
Proceeds from the sale will help support the Lions Club's activities.
The Arc of Jefferson & Nearby Counties
Members of The Arc of Jefferson & Nearby Counties Board of Directors met Thursday, Sept. 26, at the Tenco offices in Fairfield.
The board outlined committees and nominated chairs as follows:
' Audit (Chairs: Codie Amason and Lynn Kane)
' Camp (Chaired as needed)
' Financial Requests (Chairs: Mary Sue Hoaglin, Lynn Kane, Janel Orgovanyi)
' Finance (Chair: Barb Withrow) No updates
' Fundraising (Chaired by all board as needs/events arise)
' Government/Arc of Iowa (Chair: Codie Amason) No updates
' Grants (Chaired as needed)
' Marketing and Publicity (Chair: Janel Orgovanyi and Darlene Vorhies)
' Nomination (Chairs: Janet Morris and Brian Simmons)
' Scholarships (Chairs: Mary Sue Hoaglin and Sandy Stever)
' Special Olympics (Chair: Janel Orgovanyi)
Reports from Individual Committees were made.
Audit Committee: Budget for 2020 will be drafted for the October meeting and finalized in the November meeting. New budget begins Jan. 10. Audit forms for 2019 are still pending from the Arc State office.
Camp: The Board voted to finance the remaining balance for a camper who attended Camp Reece this past summer. The eligibility guidelines for financial assistance have been completed and will be sent to local schools and are available to individuals as needed. The guidelines define the criteria students/individuals must meet to request financial assistance from the Arc to attend Camp Courageous, Reece or Sunnyside.
Financial Requests: A Request for Financial Assistance form has been created and will be distributed to area school administrators and area adult providers. A request was received from Visions Academy from Cardinal school district. The RFA form was sent for more information to be provided by the October meeting.
Fundraising: Fairfield Middle School Principal Angela Jones has suggested a 5K run/walk to help with Camp Courageous funds. Janel Orgovanyi will work with Jones to get more information for the next meeting.
County Fair: Darlene Vorhies reported that $3,413.50 was collected from the auction this year. All monies will go to help support Arc camperships. A big shout out to Darlene Vorhies who chairs this event annually.
Spaghetti Dinner: Organizers are in the process of selecting a date in March for the sixth annual spaghetti dinner.
Scholarships: The Committee reported that all schools will be contacted by Jan. 1, with the Arc's scholarship information.
Special Olympics: The Fairfield Flaming Marshmallows Youth Team, coached by Lisa Phillips and Janel Orgovany,i is practicing for the regional bowling tournament Oct. 21 in Ottumwa. FFM submitted a request to pay for bowling practices and to purchase equipment for the upcoming mid-winter and summer games. The Arc approved up to $400 for these purchases.

The next Arc of Jefferson & Nearby Counties will be at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 24, at Tenco in Fairfield.
Celebrate Recovery
Approximately 35 people, including four newcomers, from Washington, Brighton, Wayland and Fairfield, attended a Celebrate Recovery meeting Thursday, Oct. 3, at the Brighton Church of God.
The evening included dinner, praise and worship music, optional small group sharing, and a lesson on how how the 'attitude of gratitude” toward God, others He has placed in your life, your recovery, and your church can make a huge difference in overcoming any hurt, habit or hangup.
The next weekly meeting, open to anyone with any hurt, habit, or hangup, will be Thursday, Oct, 10, at the Brighton Church of God beginning at 6 p.m. with a free meal.
PEO Chapter AQ
P.E.O. Chapter AQ met at the home of Karen Schafter Tuesday evening, Sept. 25.
Joyce Dunbar served as co-hostess.
Eleven members were in attendance.
President Rose Jaynes led the meeting.
Joyce Dunbar and Shirley Schooley gave a fun program about Founders Day which everyone enjoyed. Karen Schafrer showed the doll she had made representing one of the founding sisters.
Lunch was served at the close of the meeting.
Walkers met Wednesday, Oct. 2, at Lake Darling. They participated in the Iowa Healthiest State Walk.
