PEO Chapter AQ
P.E.O. Chapter AQ met Tuesday evening, Oct. 8, at the home of Ruth Ann Stacy. Cathy Rich served as co-hostess. President Rose Jaynes led the meeting.
Stacy gave a review of the 150th International Convention held in Des Moines. Over 6,000 attended the three-day event. She volunteered for one of the activities along with her sister, Kathy Hunt, of Washington. It was amazing the number of ways P.E.O. has helped through educational loans and scholarships over the years.
American Legion Auxiliary No. 29
The American Legion Auxiliary Leon Beatty Post No. 29 met Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Washington County Ambulance Center. Vice President Connie Pence called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. Opening prayer was given by chaplain Dixie Young. The Pledge of Allegiance and the reading of the Preamble of God and Country was recited by all.
The May minutes were read and approved.
Treasurer's Report showed no deposits or disbursements. The 990 has been filed. The report was approved.
Membership: 25 percent and dues are $25 for seniors and $6 for juniors. It was reported that the unit is mourning the loss of members Julie Wells, Shirley Miller, Helen Lease
Thank you notes were received from Sue Gilmere for the card she received from the unit at the time she was ill, and from Maggie Morgan thanking the ùnit for allowing her to attend Girls State.
Sue attended a workshop at Winfield this past summer and brought to the unit the Plan of Action for 2019-20. This year, 2019, is the 100-year anniversary of the American Legion Auxiliary and the 74th year for Girls State.
It is time to order the poppies for 2020 Memorial Day. Dixie Young will be in charge of ordering poppies at the price of $ 22 per hundred or 22 cents apiece. It was noted that the poppies are having a hard time getting made.
The fall meeting will be held in Swisher Oct 26. Sue Gilmere will not be attending this year. Reports are due by the end of the year to be sent to the State.
The American Legion and Legion Riders will not have a veteran's dinner this year due to lack of attendance for the past several years. Events will be held at the Blair House, United Presbyterian Home, and Halcyon House for all veterans.
The unit did WIZ at the bake sales held at the car shows during the summer, thank you to everyone who provided all the good desserts.
It was noted that it time for election of officers and after much discussion it was decided that all officers except the president will remain the same. They are Vice President Connie Pence, Secretary Carla McCandless, Treasurer Dixie Conrad, Girls State, Martha Hahn, Historian Connie Pence, Chaplain and Poppy Chairperson Dixie Young.
It was noted that Paul Hazelett and Wendell Arduser will be going on the next honor flight. Thanks to both for their service.
Katie Donnelly, Maggie Morgan, Sophia and Ellie Bell attended Girls State. They had a good time and learned a lot. The girls thanked the unit for choosing them to attend. It is the 74th year for this event and there was 274 girls from the state attending.
Next meeting will be 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 12, at the Washington County Ambulance Center. All ladies who have a veteran in the family is invited.
Motion to adjourn was made by Carla McCandless, and seconded by Martha Hahn. Closing prayer was given by Dixie Young.
