Laugh for the Lord?s Cupboard by bringing food donations to comedy night at 8 p.m. July 29 at the Fairfield Arts and Convention Center.
Tim Sullivan, one of the country?s most traveled stand-up comedians, will headline the evening. Sullivan began his comedy career at 19 years old performing in bars and clubs throughout the Midwest. Sullivan eventually moved to the Pacific Northwest where he learned from veteran comedians, began to find his own voice and picked up his first headlining gigs.
Sullivan has appeared in various commercials and movies, most recently on the HBO series ?John From Cincinnati.? He has recorded two CDs and three DVDs, and his most recent DVD, ?Bigger Than Ashton,? is a humorous take on dating the same girl as fellow Cedar Rapids native Ashton Kutcher. Sullivan has entertained audiences from the Improv in Chicago to the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles as well as the U.S. military.
Opening for Sullivan is Tom Sharpe, who was recently named regional winner of the World Series of Comedy, winning a trip to Las Vegas, Nev., for the national competition. Sharpe beat out 40 comics in four days to take the title.
The comedy night is presented by the Lord?s Cupboard of Jefferson County and sponsored by Red Rock Tavern. Tickets are $7 with a donation of a non-perishable canned or packaged food item and $10 without a food item.
The convention center is partnering with the Lord?s Cupboard of Jefferson County for a ?Thanksgiving in July? food drive and will serve as a drop-off point for donations from July 23-31. Non-perishable donations can be left in the drop boxes at the convention center during regular business hours.
The local food pantry distributed food to nearly 1,000 households last year. Around 50 percent of households receiving assistance are under 18 years of age.
