Comet boys improve to 6-4; Warrior boys win fifth straight

ELDON ? The Cardinal boys continued their undefeated 2013 with a 59-45 win over conference foe Central Lee Tuesday.
Dakota Showman and Kaleb Durflinger led the way on offense with 18 and 15 points, respectively, as the Comets improved to 2-0 after the holiday break. Cardinal also handled Moravia last Thursday.
The Comets opened Tuesday?s home game taking a 13-12 advantage and leading 26-24 at halftime. They stretched the lead to 38-33 after three quarters and finished Central Lee off with a 21-point fourth.
Also scoring for Cardinal were Jonathan Pedersen and Cody Carter with nine points each. Brandon Potts finished with six points. Durflinger pulled down a game-high 13 boards, Pedersen supplied six assists and Showman nabbed four steals.
The 6-4 Comets will look to continue their hot streak when they host Burlington Notre Dame on Friday.
Comet girls upended
ELDON ? Central Lee scored 37 points by halftime en route to a 61-31 defeat of host Cardinal Tuesday in Eldon.
The Comets trailed 37-17 at the intermission and never got going. They scored four points in the third quarter and 10 more in the fourth.
Freshman Delaney Ridgway recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 boards. Senior Lindsay Moore and freshman Lexi Fullenkamp scored five each. Senior Morgan Honomichl netted four points.
The 5-7 Comets continue their homestand Friday evening vs. Notre Dame.
Warrior boys on a roll
NEW LONDON ? Brandon Plecker totaled 20 points to lead the Van Buren boys to a 77-60 road victory over New London Tuesday.
Van Buren?s Tanner Smith finished with 18 points and sophomore teammate Garrett Saunders scored 13. Thomas Fitzsimmons added eight points for the Warriors, who have won five straight.
The Warriors return home Friday to host Harmony.
Pekin edged at home
PACKWOOD ? The Pekin girls? basketball team built a seven-point advantage late but couldn?t hold on in a 47-46 loss to Lone Tree Tuesday.
The Panthers trailed 10-4 after the first period, but a 17-point second quarter gave them a 21-20 halftime lead. The Panthers led by as much as 43-36 with four minutes to go before Lone Tree rattled off 11 of the final 14 points.
Gwynne Wright provided 14 points and three steals for Pekin. Beth Atwood scored 11 points with three steals. Jessica Horras and Sam Wright scored six points apiece.
