Cardinal has turned the page on a brutal September, and the Comets hope a Friday matchup with Wapello leads to a more successful October.
In five games last month, Cardinal (1-5, 0-4 District 6) went 1-4 and was outscored 200-48. Its lone win came at the beginning of the month vs. Winfield-Mount Union, when they scored more than half their month?s points.
Wapello (5-2, 2-2) won?t be doing Cardinal any favors, however, as the Indians are currently in a battle for their postseason lives.
Wapello boasts a balanced offense with a young quarterback in Alex Rollinger who?s not afraid to throw the football. In 2011, Rollinger has thrown the ball 97 times for 10 touchdowns. The Indians also have a weapon at running back, Brandon Lincoln, who has been known to break off a big run from time to time. The Comets allowed more than 300 yards rushing last week vs. Pekin and will be in for another long night if they fail to play strong in the trenches.
The Cardinal offense hopes to counter with quarterbacks Dakota Showman and Tyler Batterson, as well as running backs Drew Ostrander and Nathan Yeager, a freshman who accounted for most of the team?s offensive production last week.
The district matchup will begin at 7 p.m. Friday in Wapello.
