The quilt shown in the picture is the result of hours of volunteer labor. Participants who were interested in creating a square for a quilt commemorating Washington?s 175th birthday gathered throughout the day of June 4 to begin working. This was the day set aside during the week long celebration of Washington?s 175th birthday celebration as ?Arts and Crafts? Day. Under the guidance of experienced quilters the quilt was planned out and materials assembled for the creation of the quilt. The quilt?s theme is ?Memories of Washington.? The squares were created by participants of all ages and abilities. Each square represents some place, business or event with a Washington connection that was significant to that person who created the square. After the 130 squares were completed another group of gifted volunteer quilters completed the quilt.
The creation of the squares created much conversation of businesses, places and people from Washington?s past and present. When you look at the quilt you will see representation of many well-known places from the past and present day. It is truly a representation of the many fond memories living in Washington has created.
The quilt will be on display in the Jones and Eden Funeral Home during the Southeast Artists Studio Tour the weekend of Oct. 18-19. After that any business who is represented by a square may hang it in display for a month. Karen Moenck, co-chair of Arts and Crafts Day, would like to thank all of the people who came to the United Methodist Church basement that day, and for all those who helped with the completion of the commemorative quilt, I thank you. Come view it and enjoy your handiwork.
