Ottumwa — Community 1st Credit Union is planting the seeds for the future of agriculture with the launch of its new Youth Heifer Program, a unique opportunity for students entering 7th and 8th grade. The program is designed to empower young people with the tools, resources, and guidance they need to begin their own journey in cattle production and financial management.
Through this first-of-its-kind initiative, up to three students will be selected to receive a five-year, zero-interest loan to purchase up to five bred heifers. Along the way, participants will learn the hands-on responsibilities of caring for their herd while also developing critical life skills in budgeting, planning, and financial decision-making.
“At C1st, we believe in more than just providing loans — we believe in investing in the dreams of our young people,” said Trevor Crall, Manager of Commercial and Ag Lending at Community 1st Credit Union. “The Youth Heifer Program gives students an opportunity to start building a future in agriculture, gaining both real-world experience and the confidence that comes from managing their own project.”
In addition to financial support, students will gain access to mentorship, industry connections, and guidance from the C1st Ag team. By the end of the program, participants will have the potential to own a small herd and the practical skills needed to grow their future in agriculture.
“Programs like this help bridge the gap between passion and opportunity,” added Whitney Ballanger, Commercial and Ag Lender. “We’re excited to walk alongside these students as they develop not just as young producers, but as future leaders in our rural communities.”
Applications are open to students who live and operate within C1st’s field of membership. Applicants must submit three letters of recommendation, a projected first-year cash flow plan, proof of insurance, and commit to providing annual progress reports. The deadline to apply is Oct. 18, 2025.
