This Thursday, Feb. 9, at 12 p.m., Iowa Wesleyan Piano Professor Emeritus, Dr. Joel Brown and Jerry Lalaga, from American Samoa, who majored in music at Iowa Wesleyan University, will take the audience back in time with a four hand piano arrangement of Haydn?s Military Symphony.
In the 18th and 19th centuries before the development and advent of myriad recording technologies, audiences heard musical performances in a variety of concert venues. Of course one could play solo piano pieces in one?s home, or perform songs for voice and piano also. But works for larger works such as orchestra and even operas eventually had arrangements made for solo piano and especially for piano, four hands which could then be learned and enjoyed in the home, adding to the pleasure when one was finally able to hear the work as originally composed. This piano duet arrangement of Haydn?s Military Symphony will give the audience a sense of how wonderful these arrangements are.
The concert takes place on the second floor of the Washington Library and there is no admission.
