Cover crop funding for West Fork of Crooked Creek announced

Funds are now available to plant cover crops on land located in the watershed of the West Fork of Crooked Creek. Cost share is 50 percent not to exceed $25 per acre. The maximum acres per producer are 80 acres. Applications will be ranked and based on the following items: agreeing to plant cover crops for two years on equal or more acres before Dec. 31, 2016; proximity to stream, dominant soil, and termination method. The cutoff date for the first round of applications is June 30, 2014, and the cutoff date for the second round is Aug. 29, 2014.
This cover crop signup is part of the West Fork Crooked Creek Water Quality and Soil Health Initiative. This initiative is a demonstration project with the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy that reduces erosion and nutrient runoff in the state while improving the hypoxic area in the Gulf of Mexico.
