The Crawfordsville Lions Club met Monday, Feb. 8, at the Crawfordsville Community Room with 13 members and two guests, Terry and Liz Durham present.
Lion President Mike Massey called the meeting to order with the Pledge of Allegiance and Lion Secretary Nancy Love gave the invocation. Lion Nancy introduced the guests, Global Service Coordinator Lion Terry Durham from District 9EC and his wife, Liz. After a delicious meal prepared and served by Alice Hochstetler, the meeting reconvened.
Lion Terry gave an interesting program on the impact of the Lions Club International Foundation and their work with Lions around the world. The Foundation is funded through both personal and club donations, and gives money back to clubs in the form of disaster and emergency grants. This district, District 9 SE, was the recipient of two disaster grants this summer. One $10,000 grant to provide personal protective equipment for hospital health care workers and one $10,000 grant to help people who had lost perishable food during the power outages of the Derecho. He noted that a simple donation of $2.00 per week can provide cataract surgery for two people, clean drinking water for 14 people and measles vaccines for 100 children. Lion Terry also talked about LCIF's Campaign 100, the goal of which is to raise $300,000,000 by June of 2022.
Secretary Lion Nancy then read the minutes of the Jan. 11 meeting, which were corrected with the date of Dec. 14, 2020, not 2021. The Lion treasurer Randy gave his report.
Old Business: The Pancake Supper is coming up on Feb. 20 and will be a drive-thru event at the Crawfordsville Fire Station from 4-7 p.m. Diners are being asked to enter the driveway from the north and exit south after being served. People will be asked to remain in their vehicles. Instead of selling tickets, this event will be a freewill donation. The pigs are at the locker. There will be sausage in packages of six patties, pork chops in packages of four and bacon in one pound packages for sale. The carry out containers are being donated and syrup is being purchased in individual containers. Each box will contain three pancakes, two sausages and a scoop of scrambled eggs. Silverware will be available on request. Set-up will be at 9 a.m. that morning.
The meeting closed with the group singing Happy Birthday to Lion President Mike Massey and as there was no further business, the meeting adjourned.
Ash Wednesday services were observed a bit differently this year as it was a drive-thru event underneath the carport on the west side of the United Church of Crawfordsville from 7-9 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 16.
There will be another segment of Crawfordsville history next week!
