On Friday, Oct. 31, 2014, the Crawfordsville American Legion Post 593 hosted the annual Halloween Party at WACO Elementary School.
The judges for the evening were Mary and Michael Sypherd.
Participating in the following groups were:
Preschoolers Makinley Davis as Minnie Mouse; Brysen Davis-Batty for My Daddy; Bentley Hesseltine-a Dinosaur; Peyton Davis-a Witch; Izbella Dullwoth-a Fairy Pirate; Gwenavere Ostrom-a Witch; Jeremy Collier-a Bat; Jessup Collier-an Elephant and Carter Roberts-Spiderman.
The winner in this group was Peyton Davis.
First Grade: Audrey Smith-a vampire; Lizzy Gerot-a pumpkin thief; and Izzy Collier-a cat. The winner was Lizzy Gerot.
Second Grade: Peyton Graber- a witch and Issac Rich-a soul taker. This group had a tie and both were winners.
Third Grade: Zoey Dennler-a werewolf; Catrina Sells-Cat Woman and Kade Waylerd-a storm trooper. The winner was Zoey Dennler.
Fourth Grade: Noah Rich as Bleeding Scream and Drew Diers as a Clown Jester. The winner in this group was also a tie and both were declared winners.
Fifth Grade: Lennon McClanahan-a Reaper and Zach Schmiz- a Guy with a Mask. These were also both winners.
Savannah Harris as Bat Woman was a late arrival and she won her group.
The Adult Group: Lexi Collier, Dalton Diers, Joey Collier, Laura Schmitz, Karen Dennler, Jessica Diers, Jason Collier and Amanda Graber. All of them were winners but did not receive a prize.
The overall winner of the evening was Zoey Dennler.
Everyone was invited to the lunchroom following the judging for doughnuts and milk. Legion members helping were Jeff Johnston, Mike Massey, Ernest Whiting Jr. and Dean Slater.
Frieda Finke entertained nine members of the White Cloud Club on Tuesday, Nov. 4, at her home.
Vice President Joyce Huff opened the meeting with a reading, "Pay Off." Roll call was answered by everyone responding to "Did you get a voting call?" The secretary's and treasurer's reports wee accepted as read. Program books for the new year were passed out. Frieda offered a quiz titled "Church Calendar."
Attending were: Jolene Colthurst, Joyce Huff, Betty Lintz, Pat Miller, Betty Lucas, Julia Bletscher, Wanda Schultz, Pauline Richardson and the hostess.
Delicious refreshments were served and everyone enjoyed visiting.
The Crawfordsville Lions met Monday, Nov. 10, at the Crawfordsville Community Room at 6:30 p.m. for the monthly dinner meeting. Fourteen members and one guest, Don Foor was present.
President Mindy Rochwick opened the meeting by leading the Pledge to the Flag and Larry Fletcher offered the invocation.Following the delicious meal prepared and served by Alice Hochstetler, the meeting reconvened.
Don Foor of the Letts-Grandview Club spoke to the group. He serves as first vice district governor and is a trustee for Iowa Lions Foundation. In July he will become district governor. He shared what was happening with KidSight and cochlear implants. He also mentioned he is in need of zone chairmans, trustees and officers. He reminded everyone of the Mid-Winter Conference which will be held Jan. 9-10, at the Holiday Inn in Des Moines. He encouraged everyone to attend as Joe Preston from Iowa is the Lions International president and will be present. He mentioned there are empty spots in the cabinet and they need younger members to fill these jobs.
In the absence of Secretary Nancy Love, Billie Jo Rose filled in.
Old Business: Nancy Love had been named diabetes chairman of the district at a meeting in September in Oskaloosa.
The club will hold its annual Christmas party at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8, at Bryn-Mawr. Three girls from the WACO Orchestra will entertain. A donation was made to the Care-and-Share program and for a gift basket at the Mid-Winter Conference. Lion Massey reported he had filled out papers necessary for using the school for the February Pancake Supper. It was also reported that it is OK to hold the annual Christmas drawing at the fire station on Saturday, Dec. 20, at 1 p.m. Santa will arrive at 12:30 p.m.
New Business: The Pancake Supper will be held Saturday, Feb. 14, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the WACO Elementary School.It was moved and seconded to make the annual contribution to the Iowa Lions Foundation and L.C.I.F. Motion carried.It was announced that the Lions blood drive will be held in the Fellowship Hall at the United Church of Crawfordsville on Monday, Dec. 1 from 1:30 to 6:30 p..m.The meeting adjourned with Lion Fletcher entertaining as only he can with his trivia questions.
