The Wednesday Study Club met at 11:30 a.m. Feb. 17, for lunch at the Bistro in Washington, after which they went to the Washington Public Library for their monthly meeting. Eleven members were present.
Hostess Maxine Martin and co-hostess Marie Dare had arranged for Greg Goodman, chief of police in Washington, to be the speaker. Under the heading of "Washington Police Department and the Community," some of the topics he discussed were: K-9 operation, SWAT team and the active-shooter response. He also emphasized the department's service to the Washington Community Schools. He used slides to enhance his presentation and had an informal time to respond to comments and questions from club members.
Following his presentation, the business meeting was called to order by President Cathy Williams. This included the usual flag salute, club collect and book briefs. The club members decided to present the city of Washington with a contribution to be used for its K-9 unit of the police department.
The March 18 meeting will be at the home of Wilma McAllister, with program leaders Deb Lowe and Rachel Koehler. The topic of the meeting will be "What's Up in New York City," a place recently toured.
Shane Claiborne, activist and author, will speak at Iowa Wesleyan Chapel Auditorium on Sunday, March 1, as the 2015 Manning Speaker Series. Lectures will be at 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. The first lecture is "Living as an Ordinary Radical" and the second, "Another way of Doing Life/Christian Troublemakers." This is free and open to the public.
There is also a collection drive of hygiene kits for the Fellowship Cup Collection Drive being organized in conjunction with this.
Items needed are travel size: shampoos, deodorant, hand sanitizer, lotion and soap, along with razors for both men and women and toilet paper. Kits will be packaged in the Social Hall on Sunday, March 1 at 7 p.m. Items are being collected at local churches and need to be dropped off by Feb. 23.
