LOVE TRAVELS
June was a traveling month for Nancy Oehler Love, who made a trip to Naples, Florida to celebrate her father's 95th birthday on June 16, along with her brother, William Oehler of Minneapolis. The residents of "The Inn" where Mr. Oehler resides were pleased with the activities of the afternoon, which included cupcakes with sprinkles, big gold 9-5 balloons furnished by family friend Julieta and a rousing rendition of "Happy Birthday" sung and danced to by the nursing staff. Mr. Oehler, seated at the head of the table, was very, very pleased! It was indeed a day to celebrate!
A few days following her return to Iowa, Nancy and husband, Larry Love embarked on an "Alaskan Adventure." They were joined by Larry's sister, Sharon Ryder and husband, Jeff of North Liberty and his first cousin, Barbara Whiteley and husband, Cliff of Reno, Nevada.
Four days of the 14 day trip were spent on land, beginning in Fairbanks and ending in Whittier where they boarded the Holland America cruise ship, the "Noordam." In Fairbanks they visited North Pole, Alaska and successfully panned for gold. The North Pole is a small Alaskan city, near Fairbanks and is known for its year around Christmas decorations, including candy cane striped street lights. The Santa Claus House is a Christmas store decorated with children's letters to Santa and a huge Santa statue outside. Streets have names like Kris Kringle Drive and Mistletoe Lane. Nearby is a lake with beaches, picnic areas and nature trails. Larry and Nancy had their pictures taken with Santa while there and sent postcards home from the North Pole to their great and great- great grandkids.
Their journey continued into Denali, with an early morning bus ride into Denali State Park, where native wildlife and Mount Denali rose in the morning clouds to greet them. Wildlife sightings included moose, caribou, snowshoe hare, white grizzly bears and even a porcupine waddling across the road.
An eight hour train ride in domed cars was next on the itinerary as they journeyed from Denali to Anchorage to Whittier to embark on a cruise ship. Ports of call included Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan where they enjoyed shore excursions in each.
They disembarked from the ship in Vancouver, Canada, where they spent a day on the "Hop On-Hop-Off" sightseeing bus.
After souvenirs had been stashed in their suitcases, they were glad to be on their home territory once again.
