Crawfordsville news: WACO students honored, Lions club meets

WACO High School held a Winter Formal on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2021. The Student Council sponsored a dance that day. Students could dress up, but it wasn't required. Several got together on their own and went out to eat before the dance.

WACO winter sports awards were held March 4, at WACO. Students were recognized that participated in boys and girls basketball, wrestling, cheerleading, and dance team. Students earned letters for varsity sports participation.

Lindsey Roth and Morgan Graber were commended for being named to the Academic All-State Team. To be eligible, seniors have to have a 3.85 GPA or higher. A few girls were named all conference. Senior wrestler, Landan Provino, who made it to the State Tournament was also recognized.

Lions club

The Crawfordsville Lions Club met Monday evening, March 8, at the Crawfordsville Community Room with 14 members present.

Lion President Mike Massey called the meeting to order with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the invocation.

Lion Billie Jo Rose, acting secretary read the minutes of the Feb. 8 meeting and they were approved as read. Lion Treasurer Randy Finke gave his report and reported all dues have been paid.

Old business: Lion Larry Swailes reported on the recent pancake supper and felt there was a good turnout and everything went smoothly. They ran out of sausage right at the close. Lion Finke spoke to KCII before the event and James Jennings, with The Union newspaper came down and covered the event with pictures and a story about the supper. Thank you notes have been sent to various contributors. It was reported at least 180 were served and all packaged meat has been sold.

New business: A thank you note has been received from the Clovertones 4-H Club for the donation they received from the club at Christmas.

President Massey has received a call from Ben Shelman asking for donations for the after-prom committee. A motion was made, seconded and carried to contribute to this.

President Massey has been in touch with Secretary Gary Lauger of the Wayland Lions Club about possibly sharing a Kid-Sight program for Pre-K through Kindergarten.

The scholarship program was also mentioned and Lion Luetta will check into this. A motion was made, seconded and passed to support this.

It was also brought to the club's attention that it is time to get a slate of officers for the year 2021-22. The three past presidents, Lions Swailes, Mitchell and Lion Lance Miller will be in charge of this.

Lion Swailes brought to the club's attention that work needs to done in the new cemetery in regards to cleaning up rock around the band and new flag holes need to be dug, also. In the old cemetery there is need for removal of tree growth and shrubbery. A date will be set for that at the next meeting.

Lion Finke asked for a motion to give $100 to Camp Courageous. Lion Gene Miller made the motion, Lion Joel Greene seconded it and motion carried.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned.

Pancake breakfast

Crawfordsville Fire Department will be having its annual Pancake breakfast on Saturday, April 3, from 6-9 a.m. This will be a drive-thru only event. Pancakes, whole hog sausage patties and scrambled eggs will be served for a freewill offering. Everyone is invited to come out and support the fire department.

Pie orders

The Crawfordsville Community Club is once again taking orders for fruit and other regular size pies and meat pies. Orders are due on March 22 and will be available for pickup on Friday, April 2 at 4 p.m. Regular sizes are available in cherry, pumpkin, peach, strawberry rhubarb, apple, Dutch apple, blueberry, pecan, chocolate silk, peanut butter silk, coconut and cookies and cream. Meat pies will also be available. This will be the last time to be offered as the supplier is retiring.
