Wednesday Study Club
The Crawfordsville Wednesday Study Club met on Wednesday, May 16, 2022 at Hills Bank in Washington. Those in attendance were Ruth Erwin, Rachel Koehler, Debbie Lowe, Clarissa Malmberg, Cathy Williams, Linda Wiltfang and Janice Twinam.
Linda gave an interesting account of the history of May Day, a European festival of ancient origins marking the beginning of summer with festivities and traditions of flowers, May baskets and maypoles. She shared how many countries, including the United States, have their traditions of celebrating May Day.
Following the program, the minutes and treasurer's report were read. Several books and book briefs were shared.
Delicious refreshments were served by the hostesses, Clarissa and Linda. The table was decoratively set with May baskets filled with candy for each member.
The next meeting will be June 15 hosted by Rachel.
Lions Club
The Crawfordsville Lions Club met Monday evening, May 23, 2022 at the Crawfordsville Community Room with 11 present.
Lion President Gene Miller called the meeting to order leading the Pledge of Allegiance and Lion Secretary Nancy Love gave the invocation.
Lion Secretary Nancy read the minutes of the May 9, 2022 meeting and they were approved as read. Lion Treasurer Finke gave the treasurer's report.
Lion President Gene passed a letter from the Iowa Lions Foundation thanking the club for their donation.
Old Business: A mention was made that the club's scholarship was awarded to graduating senior Lily Clark. The lunch on Saturday, July 9 for Crawfordsville Fun Days will be a free-will offering and they are prepared to have food for 250.
New Business: It was mentioned that the Columbus Junction Lions will be serving a Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, May 28 from 7-11 a.m. at the Senior Center. It was announced that a letter from Lions International that dues would be increasing. The Installation night in September normally held at the United Church of Crawfordsville was mentioned and it was stated the church ladies would no longer be serving this event. It was suggested Alice Hochstetler be contacted to see if she would be interested in doing this. It was also announced the club will be sponsoring a Blood Drive on Monday, June 6 from 2:30-7:30 at the United Church of Crawfordsville.
District Governor Council Chair Elect Love gave a brief presentation on the Lions State Convention on the Lions State Convention which she attended in Ames May 20-22. Past International Director Bruce Beck from Palisades, MN was the international guest who encouraged Iowa Lions to have fun at their meetings! Many awards for exceptional service were given and DG/CCE Nancy was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellow Award for dedicated humanitarian services from Lions Clubs International Foundation. The last order of business of the convention was the passing of the gavel from 2021-2022 Council Chair Bryan Bross to 2022-2023 Council Chair Nancy Oehler Love.
The next meeting, June 13, will be a dinner meeting at the Crawfordsville Community Room.
There being no further business to come before the club, the meeting adjourned.
Following adjournment, Lion Jennie Greene gave a very interesting slide presentation of her recent six day trail ride with friends to Eminence, MO. They camped in their horse trailers along the Alley Spring River. Eminence is located SW of St. Louis, a town of 515 , one hour from the Arkansas border and is a six hour drive. They enjoyed Kayaking , trail riding and much more.
Tasty Refreshments were served by Lion Fletcher.
FISH FRY
The Membership and Mission Committee of the United Church of Crawfordsville are sponsoring a FISH FRY on Sunday, June 6. 2022 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Deep Fried Fish, Potato Salad, Cole Slaw and Dessert will be on the menu for a Free-Will donation. You may Dine-In or Carry-Out. This event will support the WACO Food Pantry.
BLOOD DRIVE
ImpactLife will hold a Blood Drive on Monday, June 6, 2022 from 2:30-7:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the United Church of Crawfordsville. You may contact David Jewell at 319-931-2044 or Billie Jo Rose at 319-330-9955 for further information.
