Cub Scout campout

Washington Elementary School Cub Scout Pack 67 members attended the June 2012 Campout and Fishing Derby June 1-2 at Jefferson County Park. A class was taught by leader Billy Haynes for the cubs involving proper boat safety, lifejackets and their proper fit. Boarding and departing the boat was practiced in addition to other safety procedures, boat care and upkeep. Outdoor cooking skills were taught by leaders Scott Kraus, Ryan Fritz, Jodee Kyle and Kris Rankin. They included the preparation of evening meal foil packages for campfire cooking, popcorn cooked in foil packets during the fire ring, and egg/ham omelets prepared in baggies and cooked in a kettle of boiling water for breakfast. The evening included games, campfire storytelling and a night trail hike. Following breakfast, the cubs hiked to the pond for a morning fishing derby. Fourteen cubs, six leaders and several parents and siblings participated in the festivities. This group demonstrated the scout lesson: ?scouts always leave an area in a better condition than they found it.?
