The Washington Chapter of the D.A.R. met Monday, Nov. 3, 2014 for an anniversary luncheon at 12 p.m. in the Halycon House card room in Washington. Twelve members and two guests were in attendance. Regent Julie Mangold called the meeting to order. Chaplain Dorothy Miller opened the meeting with prayer and led the members in the opening ritual.
Julie Mangold displayed two items of historical interest from the cabin. One item was a program from the Graham Opera House and the other a 1906 calendar with vintage graphics. Discussion was held on where to place these two items.
Julie also mentioned the Washington Parks Department would soon be boarding up the cabin windows for added winter security. Julie has spoken with two electricians regarding updating the electrical system in the cabin and installing motion detector/security devices. The cabin committee will proceed with selecting the work to be done on the cabin.
Rosemary Harris presented the program, Battles and Baby Rattles. Rosemary was dressed in a period costume as she read from the diary and described the life of Charlotte Hatfield, better known as ?Mountain Charlie.? Hatfield led an interesting and adventurous life, especially after being deserted by her husband. She disguised herself as a young man, pursued her wayward husband to the mining fields of Colorado and then returned to enlist in the Third Iowa Calvary Regiment at Keokuk, Iowa in 1862. Rosemary?s audience was left wanting more details about Mountain Charlie ? but that?s a story for another day.
The next meeting will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 2, 2015 in the Halycon House card room.
The Washington Chapter of DAR welcomes new members. Anyone interested should contact Julie Mangold at 319-698-2033 or any of the other members.
