Darlene Smith to turn 90 on Jan. 2

On Jan. 2, 2022, Darlene Smith of Mt. Pleasant will celebrate her 90th birthday.

Darlene was born in Kirksville, Missouri, the daughter of John C. and Phoebe (Petty) Slavin. She spent her school years in Downing, Missouri, moving to Iowa after High School graduation.

She married H. Eugene Smith on Sept. 10, 1950, and they made their home together in Mt. Pleasant until his death in 1994. She is the mother of Harry L. (Sue) Smith, Robert L. Smith, Elizabeth (Troy) Vickers and John C. (Crys) Smith. Darlene has been blessed with nine grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Many people recognize Darlene from her years working at Spurgeon’s Department Store or involvement with St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, South Center Club and the Women’s Bowling Association.

Her family asks friends to join in a card shower sending greetings and memories to her at 901 E. Sheaffer Dr., Mt. Pleasant, IA 52641. A celebration for close friends and family will be held in the spring.
